Flying High with Carmenlita Scott 2

Moving and shaking, hard working and upbeat, positively producing and achieving outstanding outcomes are all action words that describe Carmenlita Scott. When Carmenlita walks through the doors of the Airport Area Chamber of Commerce where she serves as the first female Executive Director, she’s up to the challenge of helping transform the Chamber.  That transformation includes helping the nonprofit organization improve the area by attracting more businesses and making the community an attractive place to live, work and play.

“I enjoy my job because I like a good challenge,” said Carmenlita. “I enjoy improving things.” Since starting her power job just over a year ago, Carmenlita has upped the Chamber’s numbers impressively, increasing corporate partners by 82%, membership by 30% and Chamber Friends by 44%.

These impressive numbers are essential to ensuring the Airport Area Chamber of Commerce reaches its 2017 goals, including the following:

  • Developing  an internship program
  • Increasing corporate partners
  • Strengthening their strategic partnership with the
Atlanta Aerotropolis Alliance
  • Growing the Workforce Development Initiative.

Established over 69 years ago, the Airport Area Chamber is also devoted to promoting and growing business in the eight cities comprising the airport area: College Park, Hapeville, East Point, Riverdale, Forest Park, Palmetto, Fairburn and Union City. Under the leadership of Carmenlita, the Chamber is experiencing daily growth. She and her team specialize in helping business and government entities in the Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport area to increase economic development in the region.

“Each day is packed with excitement because I have an opportunity to produce a tangible, positive impact on someone’s day,” shared Carmenlita. “I bring a history of fiscal acumen and cost savings, operational improvement and effective leadership to this role.” The fact that Carmenlita never meets a stranger, coupled with her vibrant personality, are contributing factors to her success. By resolving member issues and creating networking opportunities, Carmenlita has been instrumental in orchestrating a 40% overall increase in Chamber membership. “I promote an environment with my team that is conducive to creativity, resulting in brainstorming sessions,” said Carmenlita. Those very brainstorming sessions have led the team to accomplish goals set in 2016 and will help it do the same in 2017.

Carmenlita came to the Chamber with a wealth of experience. A consummate executive who influences teams to deliver value through tangible benefits and measurable outcomes, she is an experienced senior leader in Aviation Management, Risk Management and Sustainable Enterprise Management.

Her extensive experience helped her land the position and keeps her ripe for meeting the challenges of the daily grind. The grind includes resolving member issues, arranging training and networking opportunities, formulating strategic direction and policy recommendations and implementing board policies. Carmenlita also serves as the principal spokesperson for the organization.

Carmenlita says she has accomplished so much by simply following her heart.  “Success is the result of hard work,” she explained. “I encourage anyone young and old to follow their heart. They must understand that their reward may be delayed and it may not come today, but with hard work, you will get there tomorrow.”
