NAASC-Atlanta Chapter Raises Over $50,000 at Spelman Blue on the Greens

The National Alumnae Association of Spelman College (NAASC) – Atlanta Chapter hosted its inaugural charity golf and tennis event Spelman Blue on the Greens (SBOTG), to benefit Spelman College seniors.  The event supports the Every Senior, Every Year campaign to ensure all students who have met academic requirements to graduate may do so· Yvonne Maduka, M.D. on time. The fundraiser was met with great success across the board. Over $50,000 was raised with $22,000 being donated to the College to directly benefit students.

Perfect weather was the backdrop when NAASC- Atlanta Chapter hosted its inaugural charity golf and tennis event Spelman Blue on the Greens raised to directly benefit graduating seniors in need. Nearly 200 people participating in tournament play, contests, clinics and volunteer positions supported the successful event.  Adrienne Lance Lucas, Event Co-Chair and member of the class of 1990 stated, “All of our first year expectations were met or exceeded. We had a spectacular team of alumnae volunteers who brought the vision to reality wowing attendees from beginning to end with their attention to minor details at the event venue, White Columns Country Club in Milton, GA, to the beautiful awards presented at the ‘19th Hole’ Awards Ceremony. ”

The day of fun and excitement featured customized golf attire, student golf mannequins, golf black history facts displayed at each hole, and the crowd favorite…a blue 2017 convertible Bentley Continental GTC V8 as the hole in one contest prize giveaway.  First place winners walked away with engraved silver plated plates, Master’s golf hats and ball divots and other coveted golf items. Supporters across the nation who could not attend in person, got involved by casting bids at the virtual charity auction.  Premium items included dinner with the cast of the leading Broadway musical “Hamilton”, a 7-night South African trip, U.S. Open Championship tickets, dinner for 10 with Chef Garvin, a master class with Hollywood experts, a Venus Williams autographed director’s chair, an Ireland Golf adventure, and a private jet for the day.

Founded in Atlanta, GA, Spelman College educates African American women and has been recognized among the top 100 national liberal arts colleges for ten straight years. Rory Starkey, Jr. Excels 
at Hapeville CharterM/h3>

Rory Starkey, Jr. is a rising Senior at Hapeville Charter Career Academy. Throughout his four years of high school, Rory has excelled academically, played football, basketball and volunteered in the community.

For Rory and his family, academics come first. He has an overall 3.9 GPA and scored a 27 on the ACT as a sophomore. He has taken AP, Honors and Dual Enrollment courses, including three years of Chinese. He is a member of the National Beta Club and the National Honor Society.

Rory is a starting wide receiver for his varsity football team and was voted Offensive Player of the Year, as well as Scholar Athlete of the Year for his team. He also received 1st team All-Region and All-State honors for the 2016-17 football season. Rory currently holds 12 football offers, including Harvard, Yale, Columbia, University of Pennsylvania, Dartmouth, Illinois, East Carolina and Howard (his parents’ alma mater). He is currently weighing his options and has not yet decided where he will attend college. In his spare time, Rory likes to create music and is interested in majoring in Music Production or Business to prepare for his future.

Rory is the youngest of three, with two older sisters. One graduated from Howard University in 2013 and the other is a rising senior at Howard. He is a member of Word of Faith Family Worship Cathedral and credits his church, parents and family with guiding and encouraging him to be and do his best. He is also grateful to his high school, full of supportive teachers and administrators, for giving him the opportunity to pursue his endeavors and interests.

Nurses at WellStar Atlanta 
Medical Center South 
Recognized for Excellence

Across WellStar Health System, nurses are at the center of the not-for-profit’s mission to deliver world-class healthcare to patients. WellStar Atlanta Medical Center South’s nurses and physicians who work to elevate the field of nursing were recently recognized at WellStar’s annual Excellence in Nursing award ceremony.

“Gheorghe, Brett, Angela and Amy exemplify excellence in nursing,” said Daniel Jackson, Senior Vice President of WellStar Atlanta Medical Center South. “And we thank Dr. Maduka for lifting up nurses every day. Our team puts their hearts into all they do here to deliver world-class healthcare to our patients.”

The awards spanned five categories and nurses and physicians who actively support the nursing profession were recognized, including:

· Gheorghe Balan, RN

Gheorghe was awarded the 5-Star Nurse award for his work to create the best outcomes for his patients. Gheorghe fosters a culture of cooperation with physicians and fellow team members to improve processes and outcomes. He is an exceptional nurse who is appreciated for his thoroughness and commitment to patient-centered care.

· Brett Cansler, RN

Brett was awarded the Rising Star in Nursing award for his work in the Surgical Services department. Brett continues to rise up as an extraordinary nurse on a daily basis. He presents an upbeat and positive spirit and displays sound judgment to ensure excellent surgical patient outcomes. Brett is compassionate, proactive, trustworthy and excels as a true team player.

· Angela Carter, RN

Angela was awarded the Nightingale Nurse award for her work at the patient’s bedside. Angela has been a nurse for nearly 35 years. She is a delight and a joy to work with and her bedside manner is impeccable and infectious. Angela makes patients feel at ease with her nurturing and caring tone throughout every process. She is a true asset to the nursing profession.

· Amy Pitts, RN

Amy was awarded the Administrative Leadership and Management award for her work in the Emergency Department. Amy demonstrates a passion for high quality, patient satisfaction and high reliability in everything she does. Her attitude, spirit and work ethic are contagious. Amy provides quality education, direction and guidance to everyone she leads.

· Yvonne Maduka, M.D.

Dr. Maduka was awarded the Provider Partner in Excellence award. She demonstrates her support and elevation of the nursing profession on a daily basis. She is an effective educator and helps to build nurses’ critical thinking skills. Dr. Maduka has great respect for the nursing viewpoint in any situation.

During the ceremony, a total of 54 nurses and physicians spanning WellStar Health System were recognized.

Breast Cancer Screenings

Free breast cancer screenings are being offered to eligible women at WellStar Atlanta Medical Center, WellStar Atlanta Medical Center South, and WellStar Camp Creek Outpatient Imaging. The screenings will be available through March 31, 2018, and are made possible by grants given to the WellStar Foundation from Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta and It’s the Journey, Inc. WellStar has teamed up with Susan G. Komen Greater Atlanta and It’s The Journey, Inc. to reach underserved and uninsured patients in the Atlanta Area. In 2016, WellStar reached more than 16,800 individuals through breast cancer outreach and provided more than 900 free mammograms to women in need throughout Georgia. The new, Atlanta-centered free mammogram program aims to educate and empower women in low-income areas to take control of their health through proactive measures.
